Just finish something - my goals for 2025
Setting tangible goals in 2024 helped with making them more achievable, compared to a vague theme left to interpretation. Likewise, treating these goals as “nice to achieve” rather than a “requirement of the year” helped ensure I somehow met these goals without the fear of not meeting strict deadlines. With that in mind, I’d like to try this again for 2025. Most of these goals fall under the category of “just finish something”, so I suppose that could be this year’s underlying theme.
Finish a Playdate game
I currently have two projects in the works for Playdate: What the Taiji?!, and Package Resolved. Ostensibly, I have put more effort into What the Taiji?! since using PlaydateKit in a WSL container left a lot to be desired. For this year, I’d like to take either one of these projects and get them finished. I’m presuming that What the Taiji?! will be the first to release, given that it’s in a much more playable state than Package Resolved, but I’ll be willing to take either game’s release as achieving this goal.
Read more books
While I tried to grok the situation I had with Apple and answer some hard questions, I turned to books in lieu of my iPad to get away from social media and keep my mind fresh. However, this didn’t stick around for long. While I did finish Optimal Illusions, I had a much harder time going through the rest of my smaller library I acquired last year. As of this past holiday, I also bought a couple titles I was interested in reading, and I’d like to rebuild this habit. Perhaps I can additionally find some ways to keep myself accountable on this goal, either with some form of tracker or discussion?
Flesh out Indexing Your Heart’s prototype
While porting the code to .NET to ensure cross-platform capabilities and less of a reliance on Apple’s platforms was a feat of engineering, the game hasn’t changed much since the last time I really developed it. And this isn’t for lack of trying, either; I’ve been brainstorming ideas for new puzzles and sections in the background, slowly but surely. I’ve also been pondering more on the story, but it’s been quite tricky to come up with something that ties into the game easily whilst also being dynamic relative to what you’ve already completed. Given all this, I feel behind on the work needed to get the game further than its current “well, it exists…” state. I’d like to change that and put some serious effort into it.
